We hope that you all had a great Christmas and a happy new year and that you’re ready to get back to learning ☺.
This term, our topic is ‘Revel in Rio!’ with a focus on Brazil, Rio and the Carnival! The children will be learning about the famous landmarks in Rio and across Brazil as well as thinking about the situation of Brazil in terms of its geography. We will focus particularly on learning geographical terms such as the Equator and Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
The children will also be making head dresses which they will be able to wear to our very own carnival procession, which will be happening at the end of term – the children will be able to put their dancing skills to practise in the samba at the carnival!
In English, we will be focusing on the book ‘Trash’ by Andy Mulligan. It follows three teenage boys who live in poverty and work to sift rubbish at a dump in a big city. They find something on the dump which changes the course of their lives, not always in a positive way.
In maths, there will be a strong focus on learning calculation strategies – both mental and written in preparation for the new calculation paper in the SAT this year. We will also be working on being able to reason mathematically to solve multi-step problems in preparation for the other two papers.
The SATs will come around faster than you think so please try to do as much reading and calculations practise as you can at home!
