Term 1 Overview

Nursery Rhymes will be our focus this term. We will be interpreting them in many ways, lots of role play, how they contain numbers, art work and the rhyming aspects which helps children’s reading skills. To help us it would be good if you could teach your child some of the nursery rhymes you learnt at school, especially those that have actions. Your child could then teach the rest of the class.

The children will be building the muscles in their hands, so they will have a firm pencil grip, by doing lots of cutting, sewing, posting and play dough. This term we will focus on learning their sounds, writing their names and numbers. They will also be singing Nursery Rhymes and Action songs. The children will be bringing home two types of books to read. One will be a story book that you can share together the other will be a book with no words. With this book we would like you to encourage your child to make up and tell the story from the pictures. Please feel free to write comments in their reading records on any aspect of their reading.

From the 26th September we will start daily recognition of Jolly Phonics. We will also be giving out the Phonic packs on this day.  Please look at the black board in the playground and our weekly newletter to see our focus sounds for the week and any additional information.

As a school we are promoting “Learning powers at Grovelands” and this term we are focusing on “Engagement”.

These are:

“I come into school ready to learn.”

“I can be a good listener.”

“I can listen to my teacher and my friends”

“I enjoy my learning.”

“I can concentrate and finish my work”

  • We love to have parent helpers. If you would like to help in school please talk to your child’s key teacher. You will have to be Police checked first and forms for this are at the school office.
  • Please make sure you check the notice board in the playground regularly. We often put quick notes up there for your information.  In addition, we give out a weekly newsletter.
